I went to this small par 3 course this morning after dropping the kids off at day care. I got paired up with a guy named Garry. He is a bit of a beginner like myself. At any rate, I got the question. “What do you do?”
When I tell people that I am a professional photographer, I always feel that my response allows for such a broad interpretation of what I do. I most certainly do not respond with “I am the Master of Shadows”. And I always feel that responding with Wedding Photographer is way to feminine. However, photography is what I love to do, and I am good at it. But I digress.
We were on the 18th hole, and Garry hit one that landed right next to the cup. It was a nice shot. He turns to me and exclaims, “Finally! A chance for a birdie!” I wanted to tell him that he just had 17 other chances prior to this one, but I didn’t say a word. He was a police officer. A big guy with a mustache.
I liked talking to Garry though. He was passionate about what he did for a living. He was happy, and that made it a good round of golf. I saw some of myself in Garry, as we are both passionate about what we do.
Every wedding I shoot in a year is like every hole in a round of golf. It’s not enough to just show up, you have to be passionate about making that birdie each and every time you step up to the tee. Each wedding is an opportunity to capture that one in a million shot. That one shot that everyone talks about. No doubt about it, I am passionate about my photography.
I gave Garry my card. With any luck, he’ll visit my site, see some of my work, think it is amazing, and I will regain some of my testosterone.
Oh ya. I kicked Garry’s butt in golf today!
