Sepia on White
While my work is very heavy with shadows, there are times when I just have to kill all of the shadows in the image in order to prove to myself that my style is intent-full.

One benefit of hiring a photographer with an actual studio is the fact that you can create your bridal portrait indoors. This minimizes chances of damaging your dress, ensures good lighting, and allows for more posing options that what can be done on concrete. Additionally brides have the comfort of air conditioning which limits shine [...]

I love directional light. When photographing in direct sunlight like this, I like to use a spot meter on the brightest point in the image.

To get this shot, you have to bring a broom and garbage bag. At times there is a good amount of cigarette butts on the stairs as well as other garbage. You see, there is a campus bar under the stairs. The balance created by the architectural elements makes this one of my favorite locations for photographing [...]

Location: Rice University Taken with natural light only, this bridal portrait is very elegant. Notice the leading lines of the hallway drawing your eye to the subject. Directional light from right to left allows the final portrait to show great detail in the fabric.

There are times when I am in a room with a bride and her parents and I will close all the drapes and turn all the lights off except for one.

Location: Sacred Heart Galveston After a wedding ceremony ends is traditionally the time to create the formal family group shots. After those are out of the way I spend about 15 additional minutes with my clients where I just set myself loose and play.

Bride in a Garden

Location: Versailles Just South of Paris is Versailles. It’s a truly magical place to be with a camera and a bride. Figuring our the balance of this image was not the easiest thing to do. I had my client walk up and down this ramp nine or ten times until I captured her with [...]

Every hour, on the hour, The Eiffel Tower lights up for ten minutes. Across the street there is a Merry Go Round, and the perfect location for an engagement portrait. I posed my couple and then asked the operator if he could stop the ride for a few minutes so I could get my [...]

“I think the idealization of women is indigenous to men. There are various ways of idealizing women, especially sexually, based in almost every case on their inaccessibility… When a woman functions as an unobtainable love object, then she takes on a mythical quality.” Poet Laureate James Dickey, Self Interviews, p. 153 As a photographer and an [...]

Location: Butler’s Courtyard Every so often I take an image and I just know that it is going to be good. Normally, when a bride is walking down the isle and is on her way to the ceremony, I would only photograph the bride from the back to show the train. But this day, I [...]

Location: Venice While I absolutely love this image, it never scores well at competition as the shadows on the Bride’s back are to black and don’t show any detail. Dark shadows are kind of my thing though, and I refuse to make any changes to the image.

It is the amateur photographer that feels every picture he or she takes of their clients need to be well lit, and the subjects standing next to each other smiling at the camera. They feel that the only way that they will be able to sell a photograph to their client is if they are smiling. [...]

Heaven On Earth

Without a doubt this is my signature image. There’s a difference between a commercial photographer and an art photographer. 99.9% of all wedding photographers are commercial photographers, specialized in weddings. The commercial photographer produces photographs that are in focus, well lit, and capture a lot of detail. The commercial photographer is a flatterer. The [...]
