One evening last November I was picking my kids up from school. They’re attend daycare/school at a fantastic facility called Primrose at Crossroads Park. Somehow the question was asked by one of the Directors about my photography, and if I would like the opportunity to photograph the kids with Santa. I said of course…. how hard could it be?
OMG. It was as if we launched a new company in a single month! Price lists had to be made. A background and materials had to be purchased. And of course, I couldn’t just use a camera mounted flash, I had to incorporate my knowledge of formal studio lighting into the portraits. And there was no way that I could just take one pose of each child, I had to make sure that each parent, if possible, was presented with three to five poses to chose from. And I wanted to make sure that I was able to photograph each child with and without Santa.
You can see from the images below that I actually took the time to add a rim light to the kids hair coming in from the right side of the image. It added a bit more separation from the background and made the kids a bit more three dimensional in the portraits. I tried to keep the posing very simple for this shoot so I could focus more on the expressions of the kids.
Needless to say, it was a huge undertaking. AND, I had to purchase a Santa suit. Austin, my Marketing Director, was immediately nominated to be Santa.
And with my interns Ashley and Angelica at my side, everything went smoothly and professionally on the shoot. I think all in all, they came out rather nicely, and truthfully we had fun!
On top of all that, we answered each parent’s phone call in a very timely manner, and the portraits were all delivered on time for Christmas!

The first kids below are the Dawson Divas! Mrs. Dawson is our school’s Director and an Area Director for Primrose. After the Dawsons’s I have of course posted images of my own children, Katie and Gavin! They of course had to tell all their friends that their Daddy brought Santa to school.
