Today I photographed the team at Sandler Training, which is part of Stratagies For Success, Inc.  My job today was to create a team portrait in their lobby, and to provide them with fresh new head shots for their website.

Notes on the  portrait above:

1. This group portrait was created using three strobes, all connected by radio signal to fire all three flashes at the same time.

2. I first lit the logo on the wall. I took a Styrofoam cup I found in the office and cut out the bottom of the cup. I then attached the large end of the cup to the front of one of my flash heads to focus the light onto the logo, and stop the light from spilling onto the subjects. Kind of like a flashlight.

3. The second light was the main light with a large white umbrella used to illuminate all three subjects. The light was placed slightly camera left.

4. The third light was placed down the hallway to the left behind the subjects. It is casting the light on the wall behind the gentleman’s head. Without this light, the wall be hind the subject would be close to black.

I created this portrait while standing in the building hallway by the elevators, and shot through the open door to the Sandler Training offices

John Lemos, of the Lemos Law Firm, located in Cypress, Texas, loves the challenge of truly making a difference for his clients in their greatest times of need and giving them hope for their future.  When I asked Mr. Lemos where he wanted his portrait created, he went on to explain that he spends most of his time at The Harris County Civil Courthouse in Downtown Houston.

Parking at the Harris County Civil Courthouse was a snap, as the shoot began at 7:30pm and everyone had gone home for the evening.  Additionally, at that hour there was no really pedestrian traffic to speak of getting into the background of my images.

When I arrived at the shoot, I found Mr. Lemos at the front steps of the courthouse as he thought this is where the shoot was to take place.  With a quick glance around, I quickly realized that we needed to do the shoot a few hundred feet away from the building’s facade.  This would allow me to separate the building from Mr. Lemos which made the emphasis of the final portrait more about Mr.Lemos than the courthouse.

Educated photographers will notice how I used multiple depths of field throughout the shoot.  Some shots are given a depth of field only on Mr. Lemos, while others were created so you could read the text on the courthouse behind.

The portraits were also shot from a lower angle to create what I like to call the “Hero Look”.

Aaron and Paul Doud are brothers, and they are two of Houston’s premier landscape architects. Their company, Archer Services, recently completed a job for one of their best clients. A back yard complete with a basketball court, putting green, and a pool with waterfalls and flames.

We started the shoot at sunset in the front of the home. In total I used three light sources to create the portraits in the front of the home. The setting sun lit the right sides (camera left) of Aaron and Paul, and a 6 foot softbox hooked up to a portable generator lit the front of their bodies. A second flash placed slightly behind and above the subjects and to camera right created the rim light you see on the left sides of their bodies. Using a hand held light meeter, I used the softbox to light the fronts of their bodies just slightly brighter than the ambient light around them, causing Aaron and Paul to be just slightly brighter than the background.

Once I was satisfied that the shoot in the front yard was completed, we quickly moved to the backyard as I was losing daylight fast. Quickly setting up my camera, I captured the sunset just before it vanished. Keeping my camera in the same position, we waited about 30 minutes for it to get dark. I then photographed Aaron and Paul by the pool, again with the large softbox. The softbox was raised extremely high, so only the bottom section of the softbox was lighting the subjects upper bodies, keeping the ground barely lit at all.

The exposure of Aaron and Paul next to the pool was an 8 second exposure. The flash went off at the beginning of the exposure to freeze the expressions of Aaron and Paul, and the lens then remained open for an additional 8 seconds to expose for the pool and to allow the water to blur.

Once back in my office, I combined the images of the sunset, and Aaron and Paul by the pool into one image. The final result can be seen at the top of this post.
