Photographing a drilling platform in Texas as the day gives way to night is not just about creating an impressive silhouette. This image was created for a TG Natural Resources safety report, and every element in the frame was chosen with the project’s purpose in mind.
Waiting for the Perfect Light
The shot was taken just after the sun had dipped below the horizon. While the sky in the image is real, I enhanced the colors and contrast to reflect the richness of the scene as it appeared in that moment. I waited, hoping the upper clouds would catch the last light, but nature chose a more subtle palette. The platform’s lights glowed against the fading Texas sky, offering a striking contrast to the silhouette of the tower. This is one of the reasons Texas Drilling Platform Photography can be so powerful: it shows industry at work against the dramatic backdrop of nature.
Accuracy Matters in Safety Photography
For a safety report, accuracy matters. The cables running from the tower remain visible in the final image. The far-right cable, in particular, is the escape line from the upper platform where workers align drill pipes. In an emergency, a crew member could clasp on and descend quickly to safety. I never considered removing those cables. They are part of the operational truth, and including them strengthens the credibility of the photo.
